Growing In All Directions (05/23/07)
Musically, Adrienne Young's latest CD, Room To Grow, is a fine bit of Americana, Bluegrass, and Country themes laced with Folk. It drives a bit harder than the music on her two earlier recordings. Lyrically, the songwriter digs deeper than she has in the past and opens more doors for her listeners as well. Finding a place to stand, a place from which to view the harder questions and sometimes-inexplicable changes of life, would seem to be a theme, if there is a theme here. Each of these songs stands well on its own and Young's ability as a singer has taken a quantum leap with this project, giving the musicality of the songs more depth, too.
Timely while being timeless is a trick in life, in perception, and in music. Adrienne Young here uses the timeless tools of Folk music and her songwriter's insight to create songs that speak to changes in a changing world in a way that suggests acceptance of eternal nature of change and celebration of it may be the most fruitful course; along the way a lot of good and lively Bluegrass to frame and complement her ideas.
Outstanding tracks include "Natural Bridge," "Leaving It Behind," "In Between the Heartbeats," and the title track, "Room to Grow."
